Luke Edwards explained that the Korg 700Sm is a miniaturized version of the full-sized miniKORG 700S, released decades ago. “We remade the full-size version a few years ago, and now we’ve brought it back as a more compact and accessible mini version,” Edwards stated. This synth is based on the 700S, which was an upgrade from the original miniKORG 700, featuring an added second oscillator to create a dual-oscillator synthesizer.
Preserving Its Unique Charm
What sets the Korg 700Sm apart is its iconic “traveller” filter. This feature provides high-pass and low-pass slider controls with a physical stop that prevents them from overlapping. For those who want more flexibility, Korg offers knobs without the stops, allowing users to explore the filter differently. “We’ve listened to feedback from both old and new users to ensure all the quirks and features they loved are retained,” Edwards explained.
The 700Sm also features three distinct ring modulators, each with its own unique sonic character, and a physical spring reverb. This spring reverb is the same as the one found in Korg’s ARP 2600 mini, offering an authentic vintage touch.
