Music lovers at theautonomics.com, legendary singer Lulu is celebrating six decades of her iconic hit “Shout” by launching a new initiative focused on mental health. The British music icon announced the creation of Lulu’s Mental Health Trust, an effort inspired by her reflections while writing her upcoming memoir. The book, which chronicles her storied career, also highlights the profound role mental health has played in her life and those around her.
In a press release, Lulu shared that the writing process led her to a deeper understanding of mental health’s impact on her journey. Determined to make a difference, she has pledged to use her platform to support those struggling with mental health challenges.
A Walk Through Musical History
As the trust’s first major initiative, Lulu will lead a sponsored walk on May 16, retracing some of the most significant locations from her career. The route will include stops at her former school, where she filmed the music video for 1967’s ‘To Sir With Love’, and the historic Decca Studio, where she first recorded “Shout”—the track that catapulted her to fame. Fans and supporters can contribute to the cause by sponsoring the walk [here].
Reflecting on her journey, Lulu said:
“I have been on such an amazing journey filled with so many memories over the last 60 years, but it has come with lows as well as incredible highs, as my memoir will detail.”
She added:
“While writing my book, I had the chance to reflect on how mental health has played a big part in my life—whether mine or those I love—and I feel compelled to give help to those going through their own struggles.”
A New Chapter After Touring Retirement
This announcement follows Lulu’s decision to retire from touring after an illustrious 60-year career in the music industry. Speaking with Gyles Brandreth on the Rosebud podcast last year, she shared her thoughts on stepping back from the rigorous touring schedule, describing it as increasingly “gruelling.”
“I turned 75, and I thought, ‘You know what, I want to carry on working, but I want to do it a different way’… I’ve learned. And I’ve also become a slightly different person. I’m not afraid to be vulnerable.”
Despite retiring from full-scale tours, Lulu remains active in the music scene. She is set to join The Beach Boys at their only UK show this year at Englefield House in Berkshire on Sunday, July 20. .
Looking Ahead
Lulu’s initiative underscores the growing conversation around mental health awareness in the entertainment industry. With her influence, she hopes to bring further attention to mental well-being, ensuring that both fans and fellow artists feel supported.
