As wildfires continue to wreak havoc across Los Angeles, musician Travis Barker has publicly expressed his admiration for the brave firefighters working tirelessly to combat the devastation. The Blink-182 drummer recently visited the Rose Bowl Complex in Pasadena, California, where he met with incarcerated firefighters on the front lines and representatives from the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, an organization dedicated to criminal justice reform and supporting formerly incarcerated individuals.
Barker used his Instagram Stories to shed light on the firefighters’ heroic efforts and the unique opportunities provided through programs like the Anti-Recidivism Coalition. In a group photo with firefighters from Growlersburg Conservation Camp #33, he wrote, “These guys are heroes. They are risking their lives to serve people, save people, help people, and becoming men in the process.” Growlersburg Conservation Camp operates under Cal Fire and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, providing incarcerated individuals with critical firefighting experience.
The musician also commended the Anti-Recidivism Coalition for raising awareness about incarcerated individuals participating in firefighting efforts. “A lot of them came from the juvenile system, and this program gives them the ability for real change and to make a difference. To see the humanity in all of them was amazing,” Barker shared.
The Wildfire Crisis in Los Angeles
At the time of writing, the Palisades Fire, which has scorched over 23,000 acres on the west side of Los Angeles, is reportedly 63% contained. Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire on the east side has burned 14,000 acres and is 89% contained. Over the past two weeks, the fires have caused significant destruction, including 27 confirmed fatalities, the evacuation of nearly 100,000 residents, and the destruction of more than 12,000 structures.
These fires have not only highlighted the critical role of first responders but also shed light on the rehabilitation programs available to incarcerated individuals.
